Over the years many people have asked for a constructed deck option whereby each player brings their own black back deck of cards as their draw deck. This has been discussed at length on the discord as to what this may be;

No exclusive cards.

  • Exclusives or out of print gives a benefit to the players that either collected the game from the start or have spent a lot of money on the game. This is deemed to be an unfair advantage/disadvantage so are banned for this format.

Current in-print construction.

  • Only the most recent print release is included;
  • 2nd Edition base set
  • Dragons Expansion
  • Rainbow Apocalypse Expansion
  • Unicorns of Legend Expansion
  • Adventures Expansion
  • Christmas Expansion
  • Nightmares Expansion

No official two-player Banned list cards.

  • Banned cards have been deemed to be unbalanced or overpowered for a two-player format and these have been excluded for this format with the exception of Basic unicorn cards.

Competition tournament structures - following guidelines and structure of TTG/CCGs;

  • These formats impose a specific card limit. This limit can already be established by the amount of a specific card of the base and expansion used. Magical unicorn cards are determined to be unique and have a limit of one copy of the card and consist of the standard neigh card balance ratio of 12.5% maximum, e.g. 40 cards total = 5 neigh cards maximum.
  • TTG/CCGs are structured to play in a certain amount of time to determine a winner from a best-out-of-three format. Using a 50-minute round timeframe to play 3 games adopting this; the deck size would be no less than 40 cards. The winning formula would use a similar structure best out of 3 point system, with additional provision for match draws whereby the winner is given 10 points for a win and the other players then get points equal to the number of unicorns they have in the stable. This also provides a match point pairing ranking system if used for a tournament.
  • Unlike other TTG/CCGs Unstable Unicorns has a shared discard pile and this would still be a feature for a constructed format, however, this bans any card that would then shuffle that shared discard pile into a player's deck.

Conclusion;

  • 2nd Edition card pool (389 cards, 240 unique)
  • 40+ card deck with no more than 12.5% neigh cards.
  • Shared discard pile.
  • Win condition to 7 unicorns in stable, 10 points to the winner, and points awarded to other players for unicorns in stable.
  • Banned;
    • Exclusives.
    • Cards on the Two-player ban list.
    • Cards that shuffle discard pile into the deck.

This is a player vs player structure designed for fast play fast win scenarios, this could have other variants.

  • Shuffle both player's decks together to form the main draw deck.
