"Play" specifically refers to playing a card usually associated to the action during the Action Phase or playing an Instant card at any time.

If you Bring a card directly into your Stable," you do not "play" that card. This means that any card that is brought directly into your Stable cannot be Neigh’d.

If a card is played that is found to be against the rules, where the card should be Un-play-able. The action was invalid and the card is returned to the hand of that player. The card is treated as not played at all, it will not go to discard pile.
