A Requirement is a statement that MUST be fulfilled, to then do something.

I have a card which states that I must do one thing, then do another. I can't do the first part of the card. Can I still do the second part? If you can't perform the first action listed on a card, you don't get to perform the second. If you can't perform the first action listed on a card, which is a requirement you cannot play the card.

If multiple triggered effects require a target, the same card may not be selected twice in the same link. If there are not enough cards to target, you may only trigger as many effects as you have options for targets. You must select targets for mandatory effects before selecting targets for optional effects.

An effect cannot be used to replace a Requirement to play a card, an effect can replace the Requirement once the card resolves. The contents of a players Stable or Hand must be able to meet the requirement before a card is played.

As at DECEMBER 2020 (all cards); There is no Unicorn Card that has a requirement effect text that prevents playing the card (other cards may add a requirement.)

Requirement to play a card is contained as the first statement of the card text.

The contents of the stable must fulfill this statement to play the card as your action. If the card resolves (unneigh'd) this requirement (cost) is now processed (paid) before any other card text is resolved.
This is a requirement effect. It contains a formula of Do "x" (cost), then "y" (reward), this effect will not trigger an impossible action.

(This card has a requirement text that may prevent the card from being played.)
The contents of the stable must contain 4 unicorn cards (that can be sacrificed), the sacrifice effects occur if the card resolves.
This is a requirement that may prevent the card from being played. If the Player would be unable to Sacrifice 4 Unicorn Cards the Player cannot Play the card.
This requirement type is most common on Magic cards.

Requirement effect that is added to other cards.

A card already in the stable adds a requirement, the contents of the stable must fulfill this added statement to play the card as your action.
This is a mandatory continuous triggered effect, this effect is always active and must be done every time when triggered before gameplay continues.
If this effect is triggered by an opponent this would cause an impossible action and the requirement is disregarded.

(This card has a no requirement text that may prevent the card from being played.)
This card creates a Requirement on every Unicorn Card that enters or leaves the stable. This becomes a requirement (cost). If a unicorn card enters or leaves the stable (unneigh'd) this requirement (discard) is now processed (if able) before any other card text is resolved.
If the unicorn card would enter the Stable from being played and the Player is unable to Discard a card that Player cannot Play the unicorn card. This is a requirement that may prevent another card from being played.
This requirement type is most commonly added by Downgrade cards.

A requirement effect from a card that is already in a Stable.

A card already in the stable adds a beginning of turn requirement, the requirement (cost) must be processed (paid) to receive any benefit the card may offer.
This is a continuous triggered effect, this effect may be triggered at the beginning of turn and must be done (if able).
If this effect is triggered and cannot be fulfilled this would cause an impossible action and the requirement is disregarded if this occurs the benefit is not received.
UU-requirement not requirement.png
(This card has a no requirement text that may prevent the card from being played.)
This card adds a Requirement during the begining of turn. This requirement (sacrifice a unicorn card) is now processed (if able) before any other card text is resolved.
If a unicorn card is not sacrificed that Player cannot draw card.
This requirement type is most commonly added to the beginning of turn phase by Downgrade or Upgrade cards.

A requirement effect that is adds a restriction to other cards.

A card already in the stable adds a restriction, there is no requirement (cost) and no benefit granted from the effect.
This is a continuous effect, this effect is always active and cannot trigger an impossible action.
This effect (restriction) must be fulfilled to play a card.
UU-requirement effect 2.png
(This card has a no requirement text that may prevent the card from being played.)
This card adds a Restriction to basic unicorn cards. This restriction prevents basic unicorn cards from entering other stables unless the (queen bee unicorn) card is in the stable.
A basic unicorn card can only be played into the stable with the Queen Bee Unicorn card.
(Basic unicorn cards are required to be played into the stable with the Queen Bee Unicorn.)
This requirement type is most commonly on Upgrade cards.

When a card enters a stable, it may have an mandatory effect that triggers, resulting in a requirement effect.

UU-not requirement.png

There is NO requirement effect on this card that prevents this card from being played.
This card creates a mandatory triggered effect, that is then required to perform (This becomes a REQUIREMENT).

CARD EFFECTS WITH MULTIPLE ACTIONS

When a card effect requires multiple actions, those actions are sometimes separated by "and," "then," or "If you do." When resolving card effects, always perform multiple actions in the order in which they are listed on the card.

If a card says "and," you must perform both actions.
If a card says "then," you may only perform the second action if you successfully perform the first action.
The Requirement is fulfilled even if the first action effect is replaced by another effect instead.
If a card says "If you do," only perform the second action if you choose to perform the first action.
The Requirement is fulfilled only when the first action effect resolves.

ORDER OF RESOLUTION: THE EFFECT CHAIN

Sometimes, the effect of one card triggers the effect of another card. When this happens, each effect is considered its own link in an effect chain. You must resolve the effect of the first link before moving on to the next link in the chain. All links in the chain must resolve before gameplay continues.

There are times when multiple effects may trigger simultaneously, such as during your Beginning of Turn phase. All of these effects are considered to be a single link in the effect chain. Any targets of these effects must be chosen before this link in the effect chain resolves. If any of these effects trigger the effect of another card, another link is added to the effect chain.

If multiple triggered effects require a target, the same card may not be selected twice in the same link. If there are not enough cards to target, you may only trigger as many effects as you have options for targets. You must select targets for mandatory effects before selecting targets for optional effects.

IMPOSSIBLE ACTIONS

If you have a card in your hand that requires you to perform an impossible action, you may not play it. Sometimes, however, the effect of a card in your Stable or a card played by any other player may require you to perform an impossible action. If this situation occurs, disregard that action. Some impossible actions include:
